Bike for Friends Program!

Cambridge Area Rotary – Bike for Friends Program
The Cambridge Area Rotary is proud to announce the continuation of its "Bike for Friends" program. This collaborative community program connects gently used high-end bicycles with individuals who may not otherwise have access to them. Started in 2021 by the Cambridge Area Rotary, the program initially partnered with Bootleggers Bike through funding from the Richard Tom Foundation. Thanks to generous bike donations from local riders and the work of Bootleggers Bikes, well over 30 bikes have been refurbished and distributed to those in need.
The Cambridge Area Rotary and the Richard Tom Foundation have now partnered with Power Play Sports to continue this impactful community program. Through this partnership, donated high-quality bicycles will continue to be professionally refurbished and distributed to community members, creating opportunities for recreation,
transportation, and improved quality of life.

How the Program Works
The Bike for Friends program operates on a simple but effective model:

  • Community members donate gently used, high-quality bicycles to the program
  •  Power Play Sports professionally refurbishes and services each donated bike to ensure safety and reliability
  • The Richard Tom Foundation provides funding to cover refurbishing costs
  • Refurbished bikes are then matched with individuals and families who need reliable bikes
  • Each BFF recipient will also receive a new bike helmet!

Access to a Reliable High-Quality Bike:
Access to a reliable high-quality bike can be a significant barrier for many individuals
and families. The Bike for Friends program addresses this challenge by providing high-
quality, professionally refurbished bicycles that can be used for enjoying recreational
activities, commuting to work, and accessing essential services.

How to Get Involved
Community members interested in supporting the Bike for Friends program can participate in two ways:

Requesting a Bike: Individuals or families in need of a bike or bikes are encouraged to reach out to learn about available options and the application process. On behalf of recipients, social service agencies, case managers, youth leaders, educators, and the like are encouraged to make requests too! No questions are asked about income levels. The program works on the honor system. For all participants, personal information is kept confidential.
Donating a Bike: Those with gently used, high-quality bicycles they no longer need can contribute to this meaningful community initiative.
